What to expect at a Bridal Makeup Trial?

What should you expect at a BRIDAL MAKEUP trial?

As a makeup artist my goal is to make you, the bride, feel like a more glamorous version of yourself. The makeup needs to make your best features POP! When I started doing bridal makeup, I decided to do a free trial. This allows the bride and I to get to know each other and see if we are a good match. I want to make sure a bride is 100% happy before booking. I ask my brides to come to the trial with a clean/moisturized face. I also love when brides share "pins" to give me an idea of what she loves.

I ask many questions that help me get to know a brides style and preferences. Here are a few examples…

What type of foundation do you wear?
What level of coverage do you like?
What is you biggest concern?
What is your favorite feature?

After hearing all of the answers, I give the bride my idea of how I would like to see her. If we are in tune, I start….

I prime the skin, apply the desired coverage of foundation, conceal, set, contour, bronze, add a touch of color on the cheeks and set. Next I apple shadow, liner, mascara, false lashes, and more mascara. Some brides need a little brow shaping and lastly are the lips. I have the bride look in the mirror and give me her feedback. I ask if there is anything that needs to be changed or adjusted.

I will give a list of a few things needed for the wedding day (lip gloss, setting powder  and a brush)

Pictures are such a big deal, so we take several to make sure everything photographs really well. Seeing one's self in a picture is different than looking in a mirror. You will be able to see yourself how other will see you.

If the bride is pleased she may fill out a contract and book her big day!

$AVE or $PLURGE

I have so many women ask me what they should splurge on and what they can save on. So today I am going to share my thoughts and tips on what products I think are worth the extra money and what products to buy at the drug store.

Face wash: SAVE
Make sure you choose a cleanser that best suits your skin. I like CETAPHIL. It costs around $7 and lasts a long time. They have pump dispensers that are great for the shower. It will clean your skin without over drying it.

Anti-aging skin care: SPLURGE
Serums, eye creams and moisturizers are so important! Whether you are preventing or correcting, use something that will actually work. In this case you get what you pay for. Go ahead… Treat yourself to an eye cream that will help fight fine lines and dark circles. As many of you know, I am a Kiehl’s girl  and they have awesome skin care products that do what they say they will. Go to a store or counter and ask for a consultation. They will help you choose the right products.

**Tip: If you want to make sure you will love the product before investing the money, ASK FOR SAMPLES! Tell them you want to try it for a few nights to make sure it works with your skin.

Concealer: SPLURGE
If you are like most women you want to hide those dark circles. Buy a good concealer! I love Amazing Concealer. It is $42 for a large size…gulp… BUT when using a good concealer you only use a small amount so it will last awhile!

Foundation: SAVE or SPLURGE
I like L'Oreal's Perfect Match, Bare Minerals Original foundation and Urban Decay's Naked. All are great! So if you are wondering to save or splurge ask for a sample at Ulta or Sephora. You make the call based on what works best for you!

Blush: SAVE
I have been using ELF. They have beautiful colors and only $3-$6! Check your local Target or Walgreen to look at ELF products

Primers: SPLURGE
Get the good stuff. When it comes to long wear and staying power you need the best. For face primer I love Korres Face primer. It helps control oil and keeps makeup on all day. For eye primer I LOVE Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Your shadow will not fade, crease or smudge.

Lip Gloss: SAVE
There are so many colors so why not choose an inexpensive brand and get a few? I love ELF and NYC for inexpensive lip products.

Eyeshadow: SPLURGE
When picking an eyeshadow, you need one with great pigments (this is what makes the color vibrant). Head to MAC or Bare Minerals, they both have shadows that I love. If you buy Bare Minerals loose shadows, you may need a little practice to get the hang of it. Also look for kits by Stila or Urban Decay. Kits give you more bang for your buck!

Mascara: SAVE
I have tried $30 mascara and to be honest, I was disappointed. I thought buying a DIOR mascara would make my lashes fabulous, it didn’t! I always go back to my favorite, Voluminous by L'Oreal. I use the waterproof for bridal makeup and the original for everyday.

Lash Enhancers: SPLURGE
I have tried the drug store "lash growers" and, sorry, you will not see a difference. If you want to see longer fuller lashes you have to shell out some dough and buy a product like Latisse. I bought it at my dermatologist and started using it right away. In about 3 months I couldn't believe it, I actually had the long lashes I have been dreaming about! It runs about $100 for a small bottle , but call your dermatologist, sometimes they run specials like BOGO 1/2 off!

I hope this helps the next time you go to buy makeup and skin care products!
Please let me know if you have any questions about products I mentioned or how to use them.

Let me introduce myself…

My name is Tiffany Berry. Since I was a young girl I have always been interested in makeup and skincare. I would steal my older sister's mascara and play spa in the bathroom. So it was no surprise to everyone that I wanted to become an esthetician. After I completed school and took my state boards, I was hired at a large dermatology center in Peoria Illinois. There I specialized in facials, chemical peels, and makeup. I am so thankful for my time there because I learned a great deal. I was able to learn from co-workers that had been in the industry for twenty plus years. We were also required to shadow dermatologists, PA's and plastic surgeons. After working there for a few years I moved to the suburbs of Chicago. For a few years I worked for a makeup company and a skin care company that was all about education. Even though I loved it, I wanted to follow my dreams and be my own boss. For the past two years I have been running an on-site bridal makeup business. Because skincare and makeup go hand in hand, I really stress to my brides that taking care of their skin should be the number one priority. If the skin is healthy, makeup will look awesome (and they will need only a small amount).

Here are some of my favorite tips to brides and anyone else that would like to have great skin!

Moisturizing:The skin is the largest organ of the body and the last to get nutrients from what we ingest. So the answer is simple… give it the nutrients it craves. Try and use ingredients that are most similar to what the body produces. For instance- olive oil. It is natural and can do miracles for the skin. Make sure you are moisturizing both morning and night, especially night, because this is when the skin repairs itself. By adding a great moisturizer to the skin before bed it will help aid in the self-repair process while you get your beauty sleep.

Cleansing: Before your head hits the pillow you need to wash off the day. Think about the sweat, dirt, oil, and pollution that is nestled in your pores. Get it off! Use a gentle cleanser to wash away the impurities and you will rest assured knowing your skin is nice and clean.

Exfoliation: Depending on your skin type you will need to sluff off the dead skin 1-3 times a week. Someone with an oily complexion will need to exfoliate more. If you are more on the dry side try and do it once a week. You can exfoliate with a wash cloth, a scrub or a mechanical device like the CLARISONIC brush. If you notice your skin becoming too dry, try exfoliating less. Always cleanse your skin before exfoliating, you do not want to scrub the sweat, dirt, oil and pollution into the skin!

Sunscreen: Okay, this is my big secret… Sunscreen is the best anti-wrinkle product ever! Most of aging and skin damage is caused by the sun. So be smart, wear a sunscreen everyday! A 15-30 SPF daily and a 30-45 if outside for an extended period of time. I love to moisturize with a rich cream then put on a tinted SPF moisturizer. In 10-20 years your skin will thank you.
